It will take at least a decade to fully automate Amazon warehouses

It will be at least a decade before Amazon will have a fully automated warehouse according to Scott Anderson who is the company's director of robotics fulfillment.

Automation at present still limited
Anderson claims that many have the incorrect perception that there will soon be fully automated warehouses. However, Anderson notes that even the task of picking out a single product from a bin without damaging other products or picking up multiple products in error is still years away. Anderson said that Amazon was exploring a number of different technologies to automate the numerous steps needed before a package was sent to shoppers.
While the future of Amazon's logistics network will no doubt involve AI and robotics it is still an open question when AI-powered machines will even do the majority of work. As it is now, robots are good at doing quite specific repeatable tasks that they are precisely programmed to do. In order to get the robot to do anything else requires expensive time-consuming reprogramming. Robots that do many different tasks and are able to see and understand their environment are very much at the research and experimental stage. Such hardware does not yet exist in the commercial realm.
Human eyes and hands superior to present robots in a warehouse
A robot can help make a microchip and the body of a Tesla EV but it still is not capable of doing the human tasks required in an Amazon warehouse. It is difficult to train robots to see the world and grip items in the way that human hands and eyes can. However, robots are now beginning to gain levels of vision that will soon approach that of human sophistication.
The "picking challenge"

 by having an annual picking challenge. Robots compete to see which is best at picking one object and moving it successfully to another part of the logistic chain without damaging the items or picking up multiple items.
Other companies pursuing AI robotic research
Other companies than Amazon are also making progress in the field. UC Berkley's robotics lab has a new low-cost robot with a pair of humanoid type arms that can perform complex tasks such as folding a towel and has a good AI-powered vision system up to the task.
OpenAI a research lab has been using an AI training technique called reinforcement learning to teach a robotic hand more precise movements of the type needed to replicate a human hand in warehouse work.
Finally Kindred of San Francisco is making an arm called KindredSort that has been deployed in retailer Gap's warehouse. However, the hand combines automation with human direction but with that the hand can do product picking.
Amazon's many warehouses make limited use of robots
Amazon is reported to have 110 warehouses, 45 sorting centers, and about 50 delivery stations just in the US alone. They employ about 125,000 full-time warehouse workers. Only a small fraction of the work is done by robots. At present, robots are too imprecise and clumsy unless subject to a great deal of training. While research is narrowing the gap with human workers, robots that could challenge human skills are not yet commercially available.
Amazon does uses small Roomba-shaped robots just called drives. Roomba is a robotic vacuum cleaner. The drives deliver large stacks of objects to human workers and are programmed to follow set paths around the warehouses. The drives are shown on the appended video.

Robot burger flipper Flipper gets upgrades after just one shift

After only a single shift at the CaliBurger restaurant in Pasadena Caifornia, Flipper the robot burger-flipper is taking time off over the weekend in order to have a few upgrades.

Miso Robotics is a start-up based in Pasadena that designs and manufactures AI-driven robots to assist chefs to make food at restaurants.
As can be seen in the appended video, Flipper is basically an industrial robot arm that has a spatula attached to it. It uses machine vision to locate the burgers on the grill, time how long they have been cooking and flip them when appropriate.
According to reports it did its job well and was a hit with customers. However, Miso spokesperson Stephanie Cirigliano said the company wants to perform tests on the robot to ensure it can fulfill a large number of orders.
Flipper will be back on duty next week but only on a limited shift during the busy lunch hour to help out.
Burger jobs still safe

Flipper only flips the burgers. Humans still need to do everything else including preparing the burger and adding the trimmings taking customer orders and taking the food to them. While Flipper offers some help, for the time being, it is mostly earning its keep by attracting customers.
Caliburger intends to install Flipper in 50 different locations around the U.S. as robots gain new occupations in the food industry.
Startup Momentum Machines
The company raised $18 million to take its burger robots into fast food restaurants.
In 2012 Momentum Machines debuted a robot capable of making 400 made-to-order burger within just an hour. The machine is fully autonomous being able to slice toppings, grill the patty and finally bag the burger without any human intervention.
Yet, the firm is still working on its first retail location from at least June of 2017. No opening date has yet been announced but it is expected to be located in San Francisco's South of Market area. Momentum's robots will obviously replace jobs now performed by humans.
Chinese restaurants replacing waiters with robots

Some Chinese restaurants began to replace waiters with robots as early as 2006. However, many have proved not to be very competent. Their main advantage is that they are cheaper than human waiters. The cost of a robot waiter is approximately $1,200 and that is equivalent to just a couple of months salary for a human waiter.
As with Flipper though, one main positive feature of the robot waiters is that their novelty attracts customers. It may be some time yet before robots are a serious challenge to human jobs in the restaurant business.

Many have doubts about positive effects of development of AI

Charles Modeas, EU Research Commissioner claims that the development of AI and thinking machines pose a threat to our existence risk confusing science with science fiction.
 AI development predominate
In a speech to the European Parliament's Science and Technology Options Assessment Group Modeas said:“If you do any research on artificial intelligence these days, the results are astonishingly pessimistic. Nine articles out of ten on AI are negative. Not just negative. Alarmist and panicked, sometimes even hysterical. For me, a techno-optimist, it's shocking. And very disappointing."
Commissioner Modeas is betting that AI research will be a positive force even though he admits that public fear of the technology appears to be deep. He thinks the public fears what is the most exciting new technology for our generation. To deny the amazing benefits it can bring is not the answer he claims.
Possible negative effects of AI development
Warnings about AI development have come from notables such as Bill Gates, Stephen Hawking, and Elon Musk who argue that it could evolve to a point where it is beyond human control. Many critics also worry that robots with AI will take over jobs creating unemployment.
Elon Musk's worries
Musk who himself has been a prime contributor to technology both in electric vehicles and space rockets worries that competition for AI technology could lead to war as governments compete for superiority in weaponry using AI. However, it has surely always been the case that countries compete for technology especially technology that can be triumphant in warfare. This would be so whether AI developed or not. However, the development of AI will make this competition more dangerous..
Technology in the form of chemical weapons and nuclear bombs already show that it is imperative that we do everything we can to ensure that new AI technology is controlled. Musk's warning are very much based on reality.
Will AI technology result in lost jobs?
Another of Musk's worries was the loss of jobs.
Economists Daron Acemoglu and Pascual Restrepo of the National Bureau of Economic Research looked at the historical effects of robots on employment in the US between 1990 and 2007 controlling for the influence of other factors.
Their study showed that each new robot led to the loss of between 3 and 5.6 jobs in the local area. For each new robot added for 1,000 workers wages would also decline between 0.25 and 0.5 percent.
The two researchers write: “Predictably, the major categories experiencing substantial declines are routine manual occupations, blue-collar workers, operators and assembly workers, and machinists and transport workers.”
Steven Mnuchin, the US treasury secretary said that he was not worried about the effects of AI and automation on employment. Mnuchin said: “Quite frankly, I'm optimistic. I mean, that's what creates productivity." The productivity is increased because more is produced by each worker in conjunction with AI. However, the remaining workers will actually see their wages decline. The AI makes the firm more productive and usually more profitable as well.
As more and more AI is used in production and elsewhere its negative effects on employment will likely be greater.
Hawking's fears
Stephen Hawking is a famous theoretical physicist and cosmologist. He suffers from a slow progressing but early onset type of ALS sometimes called Lou Gehrig's disease. Wikipedia notes: "Hawking has a rare early-onset, slow-progressing form of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) that has gradually paralysed him over the decades. He now communicates using a single cheek muscle attached to a speech-generating device."
Hawking is not averse to advanced technology. He uses such technology to communicate and could not talk without it.
Hawking's warning is dramatic. He has even said that the development of full AI could result in the end of the human race.
The new AI used by robots is based on biology as a model rather than mathematics. New robots learn from their experiences just as human beings do. The older model of robots simply programmed them to do specific tasks and their actions were always predictable if properly programmed. With the new robots that learn from experiences they are less predictable.
Hawkins warns that robots are being developed that can match or surpass human abilities and some could take off on their own and redesign themselves quickly. The computer HAL in Kubrick's film 2001 perhaps provides a good science fiction version of what Hawking sees as possible.
Humans Hawking feels are limited by slow biological evolution whereas AI robots could develop much more quickly. Humans would not be able to compete with them. It is not clear how the robots would keep humans from shutting them down. Even HAL in Kubrick's film eventually gets shut down.
Moedas' worries
Moedas does not take these concerns to be pressing issues. As AI develops there will be plenty of time to address these issues he argues.
What Moedas worries about is "fake news". He notes a recent story of two AI programmes at a Facebook research center that began talking to each other in their own language and as a result the researchers shut them down.
Moedas notes that people were saying that this was the beginning of the end that robots would soon take over the human race. But Moedas said that the shutting down of the programmes had little to do with fear of unleashing an uncontrollable force but with not fulfilling requirements.
As many news reports misrepresented the facts he calls it fake news. While some of the reasons for the facts are misrepresented the two programmes did develop their own language, one which was a type of shorthand code that the programmes used in trading. as described in this Telegraph article.
It would take some effort no doubt to interpret the shorthand used by the programs. The shortcoming of the research was that they had not thought of rewarding the programme traders for using English. They actually thought that the programme aims had already been fulfilled. Given that the programmes were no longer using English they were shut down.
A Snopes' article discusses the issue in detail including emails with the head researcher. They did later research that rewarded the programmes for using English.
The lead author Michael Lewis said that he was not worried that the programmes developed their own language saying: “While it is often the case that modern AI systems solve problems in ways that are hard for people to interpret, they are always trying to achieve the goals that were given to them by people.”
Controlling the flow of information
Moedas notes that if complex scientific debates are distorted in the media the result can be immeasurable effects on our lives and families for years to come.
Moedas' concern is being reflected in upcoming studies by the EU. The EU is considering what steps it can take to stem the tide of fake news on all topics.
There are huge debates about issues even within the scientific community. When one considers all topics disagreement is even more prevalent. What is fake news for Donald Trump is probably not fake to many mainstream media analysts. Where is there an objective definition of fake news?
Frans Timmermans, Commission's vice-president said a week ago "“The flow of information and misinformation has become almost overwhelming. That is why we need to give our citizens the tools to identify fake news, improve trust online, and manage the information they receive.”
The Commission would like to control the flow of information as well as evaluating and censuring some. It wants to set up an expert panel of academics to assess who should play what role in tackling misinformation that is flowing through platforms such as Google, Facebook, You Tube, Instagram, and Twitter. No doubt AI programmes using biased algorithms will be established to filter content and feed in positive sponsored content.
Already there is a new law in Germany that is targeting social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter. The law requires companies to remove malicious content such as hate speech within 24 hours or face fines up to 30 million Euros. Who decides what is malicious content?
The ideal no doubt would be for citizens to only read officially approved news or alternatively have citizens trained only to trust officially sanctioned news. Only official fake news will be effective.

Aibo Sony's pet dog robot comes to life again after injection of AI

Sony's Aibo pet dog robot is returning to the market. Aibo was launched in 1999 originally. Sony claims the new dog has many nuanced expressions, and its body can move smoothly along 22 axes.

Sony makes the new Aibo sound quite human claiming it is "capable of forming an emotional bond with members of the household while providing them with love, affection, and the joy of nurturing and raising a companion." Aibo can respond to voice commands and also to petting so that it can learn what makes its owner happy.
Its AI capacities enable Aibo to learn the layout of your house over time as it can learn from its experiences. It can avoid obstacles and learn to take the most direct route between locations. Inside the robot is a quad-core CPU with LTE and Wifi built in. It has a number of sensors, motor, and gyroscopes as well as a speaker and four microphones.
The dog's battery lasts two hours and it takes three hours to charge fully. The dog obviously needs long rests after any lengthy play session!
All that love and affection from Aibo comes at a price. It will cost 179,000 yen or about $1,739 US. Shipments of the robot are expected to begin on January 11th. For now Aibo is only scheduled to be available in Japan.
The AI features of Aibo allow it to learn from its experiences and develop a unique personality over time. It is also connected to the Cloud.
There is a basic plan subscription that can back up Aibo's unique identity and also allows owners remote access via Wifi or a mobile connection. Cost for this is $27 per month or a 3-year subscription costs 90,000 yen or $790 US.
This subscription is necessary if Aibo's AI tendencies are to develop and to use the My Aibo app. This allows you to manage settings, access photos and play with a virtual version of Aibo. Aibo has its own camera to take pictures. You can also buy tricks for the dog at the Aibo store. However, your dog can learn from other robotic dogs. Sony does not say whether Aibo can also learn tricks from actual dogs.
No doubt many dog-lovers will decide to do without a robotic pet given the cost of purchasing Aibo. Even with AI Aibo is unlikely to match actual doggy intelligence. Nor are most people likely to regard the show of affection and love by Aibo as equal to that of their real pets. Also, the robot seems not to be advertised as being a good guard dog. Perhaps that will be in the future. On the other hand, it will probably not learn to bite the postman.
News of Aibo's relaunch came just a day after Sony forecast its highest ever profit this year an announcement that caused its shares to reach a nine-year high.
The original version of Aibo sold about 150,000 dogs in Japan. It ceased production about 7 years later when Sony was struggling in price wars with emerging rivals and needed to cut costs.
CEO Kazuo Hira said:“It was a difficult decision to stop the project in 2006, but we continued development in AI and robotics. I asked our engineers a year and a half ago to develop (new) AIBO because I strongly believe robots capable of building loving relationships with people help realize Sony’s mission (to inspire).”
The new Aibo has eyes that are made of organic light emitting diode (OLED)) displays that enable it to have diverse expressions. It can also remember words of praise and what actions please the owner.
Sony is aiming to generate at least as many sales of the new Aibo as of the original. The company is also considering overseas sales. Sony is planning to use AI as a future pillar of growth.
Sony invested a large sum in Cogital a US start-up that is focusing on technology that allows machines to learn continually and autonomously through interactions with the actual world. Sony has also established a venture capital fund that is designed to build partnerships with researchers and start-up companies in the areas of AI and robotics.
Sony already earlier this year launched a new product Koov whose aim is to teach children coding through building and programming robots using plastic blocks.
"Aibo" means partner in Japanese but can also stand for AI bot.
It remains to be seen whether consumers will be willing to pay the price for the robotic pet dog. Perhaps many consumers will be contented to stay playing with Playstation Pro.
Aibo comes to a market that already features smart and interactive toys such as Softbank's, Pepper robot, said to be a social companion for humans.
