Pali Bhat, Vice President of Payments at Google said: “Payments is a key capability of the user’s Google account. Our goal is to enable users to pay with their Google account across devices, platforms and interfaces.”
How does it work?
The use of the "pay with Google" option is simple. You will be shown a list of payment cards saved in your Google account. You then just tap the card you want to use to pay. Google then conveys this information along with your shipping address to the seller who then deals with the rest of the transaction.
Google has over 40 different payment providers as partners that will make it easier to integrate with merchants who wish to offer the "pay with Google" option. The payment providers will go on processing the transactions as they did before. New partners will be constantly added. The option requires that sellers use the Google Payment API hence the service is not yet available everywhere. However there is already a
long list of supported services.
One small step for payments, one giant leap for Google
For now, the system works on mobile apps and the Chrome browser but that could change.
Bhat predicted: “We are starting with Chrome but plan to bring this experience to other browsers as well. Stay tuned."
The Pay with Google service was announced last May and went live officially on October 23rd. The system will eliminate the need for purchasers to fill out payment information and forms when buying items online. Its primary virtue is to speed up the checkout process for people using a mobile phone or tablet to pay for goods and services bought online.
Pali Bhat of Google said in a blog post:"If you’ve ever paid for something on your phone or tablet, you know just how frustrating checkout can be. Maybe you had to fill in a bunch of forms. Maybe your session timed out. Maybe you encountered an error and had to start all over again." The new option he claimed will enable you to pay with just a few clicks.
