More than a year has passed since there were significant protests in
Oman. The government promised reforms at the time. Now new peaceful
protests have taken place in the town of Sohar an industrial center.
Protesters are demanding jobs and implementation of the reforms
promised last May. Up to 200 Omanis many recent graduates demonstrated
in Sohar demanding an end to corruption as well.
Some
demonstrators also called for release of protesters from jail who were
charged after last year's protests. Two people died and more than one
hundred were injured in those protests. A number of strikes have taken
place lately in Oman in the oil, education, and health care sectors.
Sultan Qaboos a U.S. ally has ruled for more than 40 years. He promises
a 2.6 billion dollar spending program to boost jobs. The government
claims it will produce 50,000 jobs. Perhaps this will placate most
protesting Omanis. For more see this article.
